How to use the VIN decoder to check the chassis number for free?
Every car, new or used, has a unique 17-character identification number that contains all the vehicle's information.
All you have to do is enter this number in the Enter VIN number field and click Check.
Our VIN decoder will give you basic vehicle information, such as make and model, which is enough to check if the chassis number is correct.
Please note that the chassis number does not contain the following characters: O (o), I (i), Q (q), to avoid confusion with similar-looking numbers 0, 1 and 9. If you enter some of these characters, the reading of the VIN number will be invalid.
To get additional information about the vehicle such as mileage, accidents and damage to the vehicle, theft records, defects and recalls, pictures and value of the vehicle, you need to access the VinCheckExpert vehicle history report.
What is a chassis number (VIN number)?
The chassis number is a number that is unique to each car. The standard for marking vehicles with a unique 17-character code was introduced in 1981.
The VIN number is divided into three parts. Each section provides different information about the vehicle.
WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) identifies the car manufacturer. It consists of 3 numbers and/or letters. The first character indicates the country of origin, the second indicates the brand name, and the third indicates the manufacturer's division or body type.
VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section) consists of five characters and describes the engine size and type, brake system, car series, model and body style.
VIS (Vehicle Identifier Section) is unique for each car. These signs show the model year, factory of manufacture, check digit and serial number of the car.
Where can I find the chassis number?
The chassis number (VIN number) can be found in several places:
- On the windshield, in the lower left corner on the driver's side.
- Open the driver's door. There is a sticker on the chassis pillar with the chassis number.
- Open the hood. Under the engine cover, there is an identification plate with the chassis number.
- Vehicle documentation (registration card, insurance policy).
How do I check the history of a used car using the chassis number (VIN) decoder?
By entering vehicle data into the VIN decoder, you will receive basic vehicle data. By creating a report on the history of a used car, in addition to basic data, you will receive valuable data such as:
- Mileage. Mileage reimbursement is the most common used car sales scam. In this way, sellers unauthorizedly raise the price of the vehicle that you pay.
- Accidents and damage. About 30% of used cars have minor or major damage as a result of traffic accidents, which can affect the safety and security of the car.
- Record of theft. This information is very important in order not to be deceived and buy a stolen car.
- Defects and recalls. This record allows you to see the most common problems with a specific model (air bags, engine, electrics, etc.).
- Value of the vehicle. A vehicle valuation is a great tool that allows you to negotiate the price when buying a used car.
- Archival images of cars. The pictures of the vehicle allow you to see what the car was like before the sale. These are pictures of certification houses, from auctions, insurance companies.
This information can help you when buying a car, in order to avoid fraud and overpaying for the car above its market price. You can see how it looks in the examples of our reports.
Why is the chassis number important?
The chassis number is the only information you need to check the history of any car. This number follows the car from its birth to its death.
Regardless of the change of owner or the country of origin in which the car is located, the application of blockchain technology allows us to record all data about the vehicle and make it available without the possibility of deleting it from the database.
If the car has had an accident or the mileage has been returned or stolen in a country, this information will be recorded.
By decoding the chassis number and purchasing a vehicle history report, you will receive all this information in the form of a single report.
VinCheckExpert vehicle history report allows you to get data on vehicle mileage, average mileage, vehicle accidents and damage, legality, manufacturing defects and recalls, vehicle value and archive images of the vehicle.
