What is an Audi VIN decoder?

Every Audi car has a unique 17-character chassis number. Based on this number, a clear specification of the vehicle can be obtained.

This code consists of a combination of letters and numbers and is unique for every Audi vehicle. Checking the vehicle should be the first step before buying a used vehicle. The data you get will not only identify the vehicle, but you can also get other valuable information about the history of that vehicle.

What does the Audi VIN decoder include?

The Audi VIN number is divided into three segments. Each section provides different information about the vehicle.

The World Car Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) consists of the first 3 characters. The first sign refers to the country of manufacture, the second indicates the brand, and the third indicates the manufacturer's division.

Depending on the manufacturer's country, i.e. the place where the Audi factory is located, as well as the body type, the WIM may differ.

WMI Country
AAAAudi South Africa
TRUAudi Hungary
WACAudi/Porsche RS
WAUAudi Car
WUAAudi SUV
WU1Audi Sport
99AAudi Brazil

So AA is the designation for South Africa, W – Germany, TR – Hungary, 9 – Brazil.

The vehicle description part (VDS) has five characters and provides important information. So the fourth digit is the series. A is the model designation of A4, A5, A6 or R8. The fifth digit is the engine and indicates power and emissions. So “F” is the designation for the 2.0 turbo 4 cylinder engine. The sixth digit refers to the equipment, and 7 and 8 to the model (“FE” is the designation for Q7).

The Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) is unique for each car. These symbols show the year, the factory where the car was manufactured, the control digit and the serial number of the vehicle. The ninth character is the check digit, and the tenth is the model year. If the tenth character is "N", it means that the car was manufactured in 2022. The eleventh character is the location of the factory. So if this character is "A", you know that your Audi was manufactured in Ingolstadt, and "D" is the designation for Bratislava. The other 6 numbers are the serial number.

Where can I find the Audi chassis number?

The Audi chassis number (VIN number) can be found in several places:

  2. Open the driver's door. There is an identification plate on the column on the lower side.
  3. Under the engine cover. Look for the plate stamped with the vehicle's chassis number.
  4. In newer Audi models, you can see the chassis number on the dashboard when starting the engine in the VIN check menu.

Which Audi models can be checked with the VIN decoder?

Audi is a well-known German car brand based in Ingolstadt. After problems with his financial director and leaving the company where he worked, August Horch founded "Audi Automobilwerke GmbH" in 1910. In the same year, the first model "Audi Type A" was released, followed by "Type B".

The famous Audi logo "4 rings" was created in 1932 by the merger of Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer into the new company Auto Union AG. The company used the logo of 4 connected rings representing these four manufacturers.

The application of the VIN number in the automotive industry has been widely used for vehicle identification since the 1980s.

History of traffic accidents. Very often cars have had minor or major damage in the past. So check before you buy.

Record of theft. Records of stolen vehicles are obtained from police databases from all over Europe.

Common manufacturing defects. Learn more about the specific problems that each model can have (air bags, engine, electrics, etc.)

Vehicle value. Find out the price of the vehicle you intend to buy so that you don't overpay for it.
