What is a Volkswagen VIN?
Buying a car requires significant financial resources. Whether you want to buy a Passat or a Golf, you need to make the right decision and make a good choice. Every VW car has a unique identification code, i.e. chassis number.
By checking the chassis number (VIN number) you can compare several different models and make a good choice.
What does the Volkswagen VIN decoder include?
The Volkswagen VIN number is a personal code for every single vehicle in the world. This code helps you avoid scams on the used car market. All events and data in the vehicle's history are recorded using the chassis number.
The chassis number consists of three components. The first part of three characters indicating the country of origin, manufacturer and vehicle type.
| WMI | Country |
|---|---|
| AAV | Volkswagen South Africa |
| LFV | FAW-Volkswagen China |
| LSV | SAIC Volkswagen China |
| PPV | Volkswagen Malaysia |
| WVG | Volkswagen SUV |
| WVW | Volkswagen car |
| WV1 | Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles |
| WV2 | Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles |
| XW8 | Volkswagen Russia |
| 1V1 | Volkswagen truck (USA) |
| 1V2 | Volkswagen SUV (USA) |
| 1VW | Volkswagen car (USA) |
| 2V4 | Volkswagen Routan (Canada) |
| 2V8 | Volkswagen Routan (Canada) |
| 3VV | Volkswagen SUV |
| 3VW | Volkswagen car (Mexico) |
| 8AW | Volkswagen Argentina |
| 9BW | Volkswagen Brazil |
If the VIN number starts with the number 8, the VW was manufactured in Argentina. If the first character is W - the VW is from Germany, if the first character is number 1, the vehicle is from the United States of America.
The second part (4-8 characters) indicates the safety systems (4), the body (5) and the transmission (6). The "H" in the fourth place means that the car has front and side airbags. Very often VW changes these signs, so a decoder is needed to identify them. The numbers 7 and 8 indicate the models. So “7L” is the first generation Tuareg, and “3C” is the sixth, seventh and eighth generation Passat.
The third part includes the control number (9-digit) which is obtained on the basis of a mathematical formula. The tenth code is the year of manufacture. If the marking is “G”, your Volkswagen was manufactured in 2016. The eleventh place indicates the place where the vehicle was made. If this mark is an “H”, we know that the VW was made in Hanover, Germany. The last 6 digits are the serial number of the vehicle.
Where can I find the Volkswagen VIN?
The Volkswagen chassis number can be found in several locations on the vehicle. These are the most common places you can look:
- Look through the driver's side windshield. There you should see a small plate with the chassis number stamped into it.
- Open the front left door. On the side of the body pillar there is a sticker with the chassis number and other vehicle information.
- Open the hood. On the driver's side, next to the hood hinge, there is a stamped plate with the chassis number.
- Look under the passenger seat. Push the seat all the way in and lift the small cover on the carpet under the seat and there you will find a sticker with the VIN number.
- Under the rear license plate. The chassis number is on a small sticker. Check this number with other chassis numbers to determine if the trunk has been modified or if the car has been rear-ended.
The Volkswagen VIN number is usually in the form: WVWZZZ3CZHE021192
